Dannnye K. Holley, Dean and Professor of Law

Immigration Law Clinic

The Immigration Clinic is operated as an in-house, live-client clinic. Maurice Hew, Jr., an Associate Professor of Law, supervises students participating in the Immigration Clinic. The Immigration Clinic provides students with an opportunity to acquire valuable and practical experience in legal fields related to immigration. The Immigration Clinic is designed to develop skills in client interviewing, drafting of pleadings, pre-trial motion practice, courtroom presentation, and trial and appellate advocacy skills. Students may have the opportunity to participate in or conduct a trial.

Students completing work in the Immigration Clinic must demonstrate competency in handling administrative law cases from the initial client interview through court proceedings and appeals. Prior to registering for the Immigration Clinic, students must submit an application, be interviewed and approved by the supervising attorney.

The Immigration Clinic is part of the Board of Immigration Appeals pro bono project and regularly receives referral cases to file appellate briefs on behalf of detained immigrants before the Board. The Immigration Clinic also receives other pro bono referrals from the YMCA, Catholic Charities, and the Tahirih Justice Center. The Immigration Clinic receives walk-in referrals as well.
