The Office of Financial Aid is
pleased to be able to provide you with a more streamlined process to apply
for financial aid for the 2008-09 academic year.
Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA)
To be considered for various types
of financial aid, you must file the 2008-09 FAFSA as soon as possible after
January 2, 2008. The FAFSA is available online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you applied for financial aid in 2007-08, you may
be able to use a Renewal FAFSA. The Renewal FAFSA is pre-filled with data
that may not have changed from the previous year (such as the demographic
information). Financial information that changes from year to year (AGI,
taxes paid, asset information, etc.) will need to be updated. Renewal
applicants automatically receive PIN’ s if they filed online in 2007-08, or
made corrections to their 2007-08 FAFSA on line. If you have not received
your PIN or you cannot remember your PIN, go to
www.pin.ed.gov and your PIN will be e-mailed to you within 1 to 5 days.
Please be sure to include Texas Southern University title IV school code
“003642” and your housing plans when completing the FAFSA.
The processed FAFSA transmission
will generate a Student Aid Report (SAR) which you will receive and have the
opportunity to review, correct, update and respond to as required. This
information is automatically sent to Texas Southern University (TMSL)
providing you included the correct school code. More information regarding
completion of the FAFSA (or Renewal FAFSA) can be found at
http://studentaid.ed.gov. Don’t wait! The priority deadline for filing
the FAFSA is April 1, 2008.
The Department
of Education randomly selects students in a process called Verification. If
you are selected for Verification, you will be notified on your SAR. You
will be required to submit to the Office of Financial Aid, a signed copy of
your (and your spouse's) 2007 tax return (with all schedules attached), W-2
forms, and a completed Verification Worksheet. Texas Southern University (TMSL)
will automatically inform you of required additional documentation if you
are selected. Individuals selected for Verification have 30 days to provide
the required documentation. Failure to meet the deadline may result in
ineligibility for federal student aid. You must be prepared to pay for your
tuition and other expenses with personal resources.
