1982
Zedrick T. Braden III was recently admitted to practice before the
7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Ms. Braden resides in Hammond,

Richard E. Banks received the Ashley Award from Legal Services

1991
Vernon Lewis, United States Attorney, won the criminal trial
in which jurors found a Houston physician, Ira Klein, guilty
on all 44 counts of healthcare fraud and mail fraud. The jury awarded the United
States a money judgment in the amount of $10,000,000.

Class
of 1974
Congressman Al Green was named one of the 100 Most
Influential Black Americans in the May 2006 issue of Ebony Magazine.
Class of 1975
Mary A. Daffin was named managing partner of the
law firm Barrett Burke Wilson Castle Daffin & Frappier, LLP. Mary
was reported stating in a news release that her position displays
the firm’s “leadership in promoting diversity in the legal
profession.” Daffin is yet another display of the diverse leaders
amongst our distinguished alumni.
Class of 1983
Judge Harold Kennedy. The Houston Chronicle
reported on July 19, 2006 in an article titled Jail Called ‘Safest’
Place for Suspect that Judge Harold Kennedy informed defendant,
Mathew R. McCombs that he was charged with murder and being held on
1 million dollar bail. This is the very high profile case in Fort
Bend County which involved two (2) Clements High School males suspected
of killing their female classmate, burying her body and then were
caught in Michigan allegedly trying to escape to Canada.

Class of 1986
Leonard H.O. Spearman, Jr. conducted his first Board
meeting as the President of the University of Florida Alumni Association
on July 14-15th in Orlando, FL. Spearman has served on the UFAA Board
for the past 6 years and as past president of both the Houston Gator
Club and the University of Florida Association of Black Alumni.
Class of 1992
Ray Jordan was photographed along with members of
the African-American Police Officers League and several other community
leaders at a news conference held Tuesday, July 18th showing his support
for Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt. The complete article can be

Deaths
Willie Rhodes, Class of 1973,
lost his battle with throat cancer on the morning of May 28, 2006.
Several members of the TMSL Family attended his funeral service on
June 3rd at the King’s Dome.
Peggy Spurgeon Garcia, wife of former mayor
of Edinburg, Richard H. Garcia, Class of 1973, passed
on Friday, July 14, 2006. She is survived by her husband, two daughters,
two grandsons and three brothers.
Ursula Joi Woods-Jones, Class of 1998
recently lost her father, Cotis Woods of Dallas, Texas. Our condolences
go out to Joi and the rest of her family.
David Rogers, Class of 2002
lost his grandfather, Judge Lloyd R. Haynes, Sr., at the age of 89,
on June 10, 2006. Judge Haynes was the first African-American Municipal
Court Judge in Youngstown, Ohio and served on the bench for over twenty
years.
