Career Service > Student Resources & Services
Career Counseling The Career Services Office offers students and alumni a complete and comprehensive range of career-related resources whose core and centerpiece is individual counseling for ongoing guidance through the job search process, support in considering options and choosing a career path, and simply getting an answer to a “quick question.” Career Services LexisNexis Web Course - www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool/career The voice of the CSO is the Career Services LexisNexis Web Course. A student who ignores this resource will not fully benefit from the Office. We use the Web Course to announce and update career information regarding on-campus and off-campus events and opportunities, such as job listings, job fairs, conferences, internships and fellowships, job search skills workshops, Fall OCI scheduling, year-round on-campus employer interviews, employer resume-drops arranged through the CSO, career enrichment programs, social events with attorneys and judges, and many other programs. Guidelines for writing resumes and cover letters, with samples of both, and advice on interviewing and professional dress are also provided on the Web Course. The Lexis Nexis Career Center - www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool/career Not to be confused with the CSO LexisNexis Web Course, above, the LexisNexis Career Center offers career advice and online resources such as Martindale-Hubbell.com, a director of legal employers whose use is imperative, before contacting, sending your resume to, or interviewing with an employer. Access to the Lexis Nexis Career Center is password protected. Monthly Newsletters Articles providing information regarding career development, hiring trends, and employment opportunities for recent graduates and third-year students, as well as summer internships and part-time employment for first- and second-year students, are posted in the CSO monthly student and alumni newsletters. These are emailed to subscribers. Please contact the CSO to subscribe. Westlaw.com The law school has arranged with Thompson Publishing (Westlaw) for access by our students and alumni to national job postings. Students and alumni may access LawStudentJobsOnline and AttorneyJobsOnline using their assigned Westlaw password at www.lawschool.westlaw.com and visiting Career Resources in the "Law School Resources" section. Internet Resources / Computer Work Stations The Internet is an essential tool for an effective job search. Computer work stations are available for student use in the CSO Career Reference Library. CSO Publications and the CSO Career Reference Library The CSO Career Reference Library offers brief, printed guides to writing resumes, interviewing, networking, appropriate etiquette and dress for every professional legal occasion, judicial clerkships, and almost every imaginable subtopic of legal career development. The Reference Library also provides employer directories, firm evaluations, public interest and government materials, information on legal practice areas, fellowships and internships, and federal, state, and local judicial clerkships, as a supplement to the Annual Federal Clerkship Survey of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), a law placement membership organization. Career Services Office Workshops and Seminars Each year, the CSO adds topics to the list below of career development seminars and workshops presented to students. An asterisk indicates mandatory attendance.
The CSO also offers several student and employer networking events throughout the year. A calendar featuring program descriptions, dates and locations of these is posted and maintained on the LexisNexis Web Course. Use of the CSO Fax Machine and Telephone Students and alumni may use the fax machine in the CSO for job search purposes. Students requiring privacy for a job-related telephone conversation may use one of the CSO interview rooms for this purpose, though they will be expected to use a personal long-distance account or calling card to pay for long distance calls. Reciprocity To facilitate job searches
in other locations for our students, the Thurgood Marshall CSO enjoys
a relationship of reciprocal privilege, or “reciprocity,”
with numerous law schools across the country. Email a request for
reciprocity, accompanied by school of your choice’s complete
contact information and the contact information of the individual
to whom a reciprocity letter should be directed (as usually identified
on a school’s career services website) to TMSL Career Services
Dean Mary Quealy Antin, at mantin@tmslaw.tsu.edu;
copy your request to Ms. Jeanetta Washington at jwashington@tmslaw.tsu.edu.
The CSO handles reciprocity requests within 48 hours of their receipt,
except on weekends and holidays. In emergencies, call Dean Antin at
713-313-7372. |
