First Court of Appeals to visit Thurgood Marshall School of Law

The First Court of Appeals will visit Thurgood Marshall School of Law on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. to hear two appellate cases. A copy of the Docket and case briefings are on file in the law library.

A chief justice, eight justices, and one clerk comprise the First Court of Appeals. Chief Justice Tim Taft, Justice Elsa Alcala, and Justice George Hanks will hear arguments in the Moot Court Room at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Following the proceedings, a reception will be held to provide an opportunity for law students to interact with the justices. This educational event is open to the University community and the public.

The First Court of Appeals have intermediate appellate jurisdiction in both civil and criminal cases appealed from district or county court. Because the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reviews all appeals in which the death penalty is assessed, the First Court does not hear death penalty appeals. Each Court of Appeals has jurisdiction in a specific geographical region of the State. The justices hear appeals and original proceedings from 13 counties, including: Austin, Brazoria, Burleson, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Trinity, Walker, Waller, and Washington. The First Court of Appeals serves the Houston area.
