Roderick Paige, former U.S. Secretary of Education to discuss the Effects of the No Child Left Behind Act on Public School Funding, Quality Teacher Retention, and the Student’s Overall Educational Experience at Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s Symposium

Thurgood Marshall Law Review Staff will host a symposium to provide scholarly dialogue on the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act in relation to education policies.

The symposium scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2006, will feature experts in the fields of education and law including, Keynote Speaker Dr. Rod Paige, former U.S. Secretary of Education; Dr. Alma Allen, Texas State Representative; John Brittain, Chief Counsel and Senior Deputy Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, and former dean of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law; David Hinojosa, Mexican American Legal Defense Educational Fund; Joel Packer, Manager for Elementary & Secondary Education Act for the National Education Association; and Thurgood Marshall Professors L. Darnell Weeden and Faith Jackson.

“The selected speakers are very important in the fields of education policy and civil rights,” said Angela Harrington, symposium coordinator.  “We are thrilled that there will be so many notable people dialoguing with the community (parents, students, teachers, school board members, and tax payers) on educational policies of the No Child Left Behind Act.”  Harrington anticipates stimulating discussions on the problems with the No Child Left Behind Act, and is hopeful that the symposium will provide possible solutions to those problems.  “The question we all want answered is:  who is accountable to whom?” expressed Harrington.

Attorneys who attend the symposium will receive 3.75 MCLE credit hours. To register for the symposium, visit www.tsu.edu/alumni/registration. The registration fee for attorneys is $40.00.  Law students and non-attorneys may attend the symposium free of charge.
