FAQ

What is the Southern Central Association of Law Schools (SCALS)?  SCALS is a burgeoning first-of-its-kind regional faculty exchange between law schools in the greater Ark-La-Tex region.   SCALS was borne out of informal discussions between several research deans at the January 2013 AALS meeting.

Why SCALS?   We see two purposes connected with SCALS.  In the short-term, we aim for SCALS to provide law faculty, particularly untenured faculty, greater opportunity (and therefore more exposure) to present works in progress and published papers at law schools that are within easy reach- a short flight or drive away.   In the long-term, we hope that SCALS will nurture scholarly and institutional collaborations as well as professional friendships and relationships among our respective faculties.

Who is in SCALS?  Already, five law schools in the Ark-La-Tex region have committed to participating in SCALS.  They are the University of Arkansas School of Law (Fayetteville, AR), University of Arkansas Little Rock Bowen School of Law (Little Rock, AR), Southern University Law Center (Baton Rouge, LA), St. Mary's University School of Law (San Antonio, TX), and Thurgood Marshall School of Law (Houston, TX).

How much is the cost?  Institutionally, we foresee each of the participating law schools as hosting talks,  yet we do not envision the set-up of SCALS as changing the custom of schools’ covering travel expenses  of their faculty members for exchange presentations.  In addition, we have no plans for charging any fees or holding expensive meetings.

What are next steps?  We have sent invitation letters to all law schools in the Ark-La-Tex region asking them to join us in SCALS.  In order to begin planning, we ask that each law school send its notice of interest no later than Monday, July 1, 2013, to atekle@tmslaw.tsu.edu
