Center for Legal Pedagogy

Greetings and welcome to the Center for Legal Pedagogy at Thurgood Marshall School of Law!

We are excited you came to visit.

The Center for Legal Pedagogy was formally established in the fall of 1999, at a time when such centers of pedagogical legal research were rare. Charged with the study of legal education, more than 20 years later, the Center for Legal Pedagogy serves as an instructional hub for both faculty and students at Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

The promotion of  excellence in legal education is our primary responsibility. It is our belief that effective attorneys are the products of a purposeful and strategic instructional environment. Our program is based on the understanding that the quality of a professor’s instruction is positively correlated to the ability of the professor’s students to perform well in school, on the bar, and in their future professional endeavors.

The Center for Legal Pedagogy is dedicated to the study and creation of  instructional design for legal education. We support faculty members by providing them with multi-modal resources that are strategic, purposeful, and effective. Instruction materials include, but are not limited to, researching and designing instructional programs, curating active resources, facilitating educational workshops, overseeing instructional programs for faculty and students, and engaging in collaborative teaching projects. Furthermore, everything we create and share curate is undergirded by Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s core competencies.

There are many promising developments being led by the Center for Legal Pedagogy! We are proud that Thurgood Marshall School of Law is still ahead of the pedagogical curve and we are one of only a few law schools that has a dedicated faculty-only website for instructional support. The website is set to launch in August 2016.  We are also a supportive arm for assessment, tutoring, and the Prep for Law Pre-Orientation program. This year, we are looking forward to building new curriculum for a Professional Identity module to be taught in the main student orientation as well. For a full list of our current 2016 – 2017 initiatives please click here.

Like the law, our Center for Legal Pedagogy is a dynamic organism. We recognize that we are here to serve. For this reason, we have an open-door policy for faculty and students. There is no lesson plan too small, or instructional hurdle too big. Please stop by, we are here to serve your needs.

We look forward to your visit and hearing more about how we can support your needs as a faculty member or student.
